Cocke County, Tennessee

Cocke County is located in East Tennessee, one of the state’s three “Grand Divisions.” Cocke County was formed in 1797 from part of Jefferson County. It is bordered by the following counties: Greene, Hamblen, Jefferson, Sevier, and Haywood Co., NC & Madison Co., NC. Newport is the county seat.

Nestled in the shadows of the majestic mountains, Cocke County is full of hidden treasures - all waiting to be discovered! Four natural and breathtaking state or national forests (the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Martha Sundquist Forest the Appalachian Trail and the Cherokee National Forest) three recreational rivers (the Nolichucky, the Pigeon and the French Broad)

Whether it's the thrill of a whitewater rafting ride, a quiet walk in the woods, or a horseback ride through mountain trails - Cocke County has it all waiting for you!

Cocke County has one of the rarest settings on the planet. It is located where the mountains' majesty bows to rolling croplands, where high trails and springs lead to interstate highways and mighty rivers that connect it with the world.

Actually, Cocke County is an something-for-everyone kind of place. From rural homesteads to bustling business centers, the county enjoys economic diversity while maintaining the pace of Southern Appalachian life and heritage.

It is considered a prime location for numerous types of enterprises, due in part to fair taxation practices and easy access to major transportaion systems. Yet, there is something more, something that can't be described in dollars and cents or square footage: It's the county's dedication to improving their children's future now, by working together to carry out a well-planned and cooridinated program based on their shared vision of the community's future.

Once a part of North Carolina, Called the State of Franklin, then a part of Jefferson County, Tennessee, Cocke came to its own in 1797 and was named after William Cocke, a political figure and very instrumental figure in the forming of this part of East Tennessee. The history of Cocke County really begins soon after the first treaty with the Cherokee Indians and the English in 1721. The stories of virgin forest and great rivers and streams, and rich bottom lands carried back to Pennsylvania, Vermont, the Virginias, and North Carolina by early discoverers, began the movement of adventurers, hunters, and homesteaders looking for fertile farmlands and new settlements.
